Ubud - See the Balinese People Daily Lives and Unique Parts of the Island

Today, travel the back roads, seeing the Balinese people going about their daily lives and seeing some less-visited parts of the island. Hidden in the forest on the slopes of Gunung Batukaru you will find one of the most beautiful temples in Bali, Pura Batukaru. Mount Batukaru is Bali's second-highest mountain and due to its remote location is less visited than sites such as Mount Batur and Agung. The temple was originally the state temple for the area where Tabanan was an independent kingdom and small pagodas are very spiritual in design and feel. The small white water stream to the left of the temple means that the sound of running water is always present and from Batukaru the meandering drive to the village of Jatiluwih is through magnificent scenery. Famous for the panorama of its rice field terraces, the word Jatiluwih means "really, really beautiful" and there is plenty of time to photograph the area and village where you will have a simple local lunch. Continue to the cooler mountain area of Danau Bratan, visiting the market town of Bedugul and Pura Ulun Danu Bratan. This is a very beautiful and important temple that was founded in the 17th century and dedicated to Dewi Danu, the goddess of the waters. It is built on a small island near the edge of a lake and is one of the most iconic images in Bali.

Bali Shanti - Visit One of Bali’s Finest Spots, the Uluwatu Temple and Enjoy the Marvelous Kecak Dance

Today, visit one of Bali’s finest spots, the Uluwatu temple. Pura Luhur Uluwatu, to give it its full name, is one of the oldest temples in Bali and is perched precipitously on top of a cliff face on the southwest point of the peninsula. Lying 250 feet above the sea, the temple has fantastic views overlooking the Indian Ocean and you can be mesmerized for hours just watching the huge swells roll in and crash against the cliffs below you. You might even be lucky to see dolphins below playing in the waves. The history of the ornate temple will be explained by your guide and you can take a walk along the cliffside path to get another view of one of Bali's most iconic sights. Afterward, you will enjoy the marvelous Kecak dance. The Kecak dance is taken from the Hindu epic Ramayana, which tells the story of Prince Rama and his rescue of Princess Sita, who has been kidnapped by the evil King of Lanka, Rahwana, and somehow with the help of the white monkey army, Rama rescues his wife and defeats the evil Rahwana. It is unusual because it has no musical accompaniment like many other Indonesian dances do, instead, a troupe of over 50 men serve as the chorus, providing the music for the story in a series of constant vocal chants that change with the mood of the actors and making a wondrous cacophony of synchronized "Chak-Achak-Achak" clicking sounds while swaying their bodies and waving their hands. After the performance, a short drive will bring you to Bumbu Bali restaurant to enjoy a Balinese rijstaffel dinner.
