    Volcanoes National Park

Relaxed sleep-in and breakfast at your hotel. Transfer to Volcanoes National Park approx. 2 hours drive. Check-in and lunch at your lodge, Singita Kwitonda.

    The Volcanoes National Park

In the Northwest of Rwanda, a visit to the Volcanoes National Park is a must and, in many cases, the reason one visits Rwanda. The park is home to around 10 Gorilla families. It is an area of thickly vegetated rainforest and bamboo.

The Volcanoes National Park is a part of the Virunga Conservation area. The Virunga Conservation area traverses over 3 countries, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and Rwanda, and covers 2 national parks Virunga NP in DRC, Volcanoes NP in Rwanda, and Mgahinga in Uganda, and houses eight volcanoes that 5 of which sit in Rwanda and forms the borders – these are Mount Karismibi, Mount Sabinyo, Mount Muhabura, Mount Bisoke, and Mount Gahinga. Mount Nyiragongo and Mount Nyamulagira, which sit in DRC, are the only active volcanoes. This incredible formation is all part of the Albertine Rift.

    Singita Kwitonda Lodge

Set in Rwanda’s northwestern reaches, right on the edge of Volcanoes National Park, Singita Kwitonda Lodge’s unparalleled position puts life-changing gorilla-trekking experiences within easy reach. In response to its exquisite location, each of the lodge’s eight luxurious suites features a private heated plunge pool, in- and outdoor fireplaces, and large timber-framed windows welcoming the breathtaking scenery and volcano views.

Elements like woven ceilings and hand-fired terracotta brickwork crafted by local artisans highlight this remarkable lodge’s authentic East African appeal. Further raising the bar on sustainable luxury eco-tourism, Kwitonda’s farm-to-table food journey celebrates Rwandese cuisine and fresh produce from the on-site garden.

At the same time, the Akarabo Nursery is a fundamental part of Singita’s ambitious undertaking to contribute to the long-term conservation of endangered mountain gorillas by increasing their habitat through reforestation.

The land of a Thousand Hills

Affectionately known as “The land of a Thousand Hills,” this tiny country in the heart of the continent offers a range of other attractions, too, such as unspoiled forests, lush meadows, picture-perfect lakes, and the vibrant streets of the capital Kigali all contribute to the increasing demand for Rwanda on East African itineraries.

Afternoon the recommended activities are to check out the beauty of the Volcanoes from the water by canoeing over the Mukungwa River. A professional guide will assist you in his/her canoe. You will see great birdlife, local villages and people, and impressive volcanoes from the river.

Visit a local culture village and experience banana beer making. Take time and enjoy making banana beer and get to know how it’s made. This activity allows you to interact with local people and taste and enjoy the beer together. And optional: Tree planting: Be part of the local community conservation program by helping them to plant trees and combat deforestation.

Overall, in the Ultimate Luxury Safari in Rwanda tour, the Volcanoes National Park Luxury Lodge is for anyone looking for an unforgettable adventure in the heart of Africa.

    Overnight at a Luxury Lodge.

Volcanoes National Park - Hike and meet the mountain silverback gorilla family

Early morning Breakfast. Transfer to headquarters for a briefing to prepare for your trekking. Hike with a local ranger to find the gorilla family and spend 1 hour with them. We offer a free porter per person who will assist you with your daypack, and give you hand when the path is slippery, steep, or irregular. The porters are from the local community and registered by the Rwanda Wildlife Authority, in this way we also support the local community.

The largest gorilla group or family ever studied is in Rwanda and was led by Cantsbee (died in 2017). This was the oldest known mountain gorilla in the whole world. A gorilla family is led by a silverback. These troops also include several younger males, adult, and juvenile females, and infants. In addition to protecting group members, silverbacks maintain order and decide all activities within their troops. They schedule feeding trips, resting time, and travel. They also father the majority of the young in the group.
