Yet over the past eight years, those same waves have made this place an unusual destination for extreme surfers like McNamara, their fans, and the international companies that sponsor athletes.

The waves, the height of a 10-story building, are caused by an underwater canyon – 3 miles deep and 130 miles long – that ends abruptly just before the city’s shore.

In the shopping area and historical cafe area of the city center, visitors should see the Monastery of Santa Cruz, which houses the tomb of Portugal’s first king, Afonso Henriques, and on the other shore, the Monastery of Santa Clara-A-Velha recovered and rescued from the waters of the river that invaded her throughout the centuries. Departure to the Douro region where we will visit Amarante with the Church and the São Gonçalo bridge, continuing to Régua with a visit to a Wine Country, passing through Pinhão and the well-known railway station.

Amarante is the destination of various pilgrimages were during the s. XVI that D. João III ordered the construction of the Monastery of San Gonçalo on the chapel next to the bridge over the Tâmega River where, according to tradition, San Gonçalo had lived and was buried. We consider that this emblematic monastery is an essential visit monument.

The city of Peso da Régua was born from the merger of the villages of the Peso and Regla, extending along the banks of the Duero. In the middle of the 18th century, the Marquis of Pombal created the Alto Duero Vineyard Company and from then on the Rule began to grow and develop its wine production and consequently the marketing of the wines, the city’s brand image.

Pinhão is considered the geographical center of the Douro Demarcated Region and it is here that many of the fifth port wine producers are located, some offering accommodation in the form of tourism in rural areas. Worthy of note is the building of the Railway Station, built at the end of the s. XIX, whose interior is completely covered with tile panels.
